AKA 34 From Coyote Hills Elementary Wins the 12th Annual Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – AKA 34 from Coyote Hills Elementary has won the 12th Annual Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge featuring Microsoft Mission Control final competition, held on Dec. 30 at the Challenger Space Center in Peoria, Ariz.
Out of 245 teams participating in the preliminary competition held on Dec. 6 and 7, six moved on to the finals. The final competition started with each team individually presenting their projects to 10 Honeywell judges and NASA astronauts from mission 132. The winning team was announced at the end of judging, and each team met the NASA astronauts and their pictures taken with them.
As the winners of the Aerospace Challenge, AKA 34 will travel to Houston, Texas in 2011 for a VIP tour of the Johnson Space Center, where they will have special behind-the-scenes access to space shuttles and command centers.
The Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge featuring Microsoft Mission Control is in its 12th year as a Festival of College Football event. The contest allows 5th-8th grade students from Arizona schools to work in teams to develop plans for an International Lunar Base complete with a physical scale model. Students use critical thinking, communication, team building and decision-making skills while expanding their knowledge in science, math and other subject areas.
