SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Fiesta Bowl today announced that long-time sportswriter Andrew Bagnato has been hired to fill the bowl’s newly created position of director of public relations. He joins the Fiesta Bowl after a 25-year career as a sports writer.

Bagnato began his career with The Chicago Tribune, where he covered several beats from 1985-2003, including a lengthy stint covering national collegiate sports. He joined the staff of The Arizona Republic in 2003 and covered the NFL and national collegiate athletics until 2006. Since 2006, Bagnato has been a Phoenix-based correspondent for The Associated Press, specializing in college football and basketball.

A member of the Football Writers’ Association of America, Bagnato has covered several Fiesta Bowl games, beginning with the Notre Dame-West Virginia national championship game in 1989.

Bagnato is a native of Pittsburgh, PA, but grew up in Scottsdale and attended Scottsdale High School. He graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 1985 and later taught journalism there as an adjunct professor.

“We are delighted to have Andy join our staff,” said 2010-2011 Fiesta Bowl Chairman of the Board Duane Woods. “His background as a journalist who has covered college athletics on a national basis makes him a great fit for our organization. He has an outstanding reputation in college athletics and his national relationships will be a great asset for the Fiesta Bowl.”
