Fiesta Bowl Names Steve Whiteman 2012-13 Chairman of the Board

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.The Fiesta Bowl announced today that Steve Whiteman, former Chairman and CEO of Viasoft, Inc., has been elected the 2012-2013 Chairman of the Board.

Whiteman first joined the organization as a Fiesta Bowl Committee member in 1994 and was elected to the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors in 2003. As Chairman of the Board, Whiteman will oversee the community-based Fiesta Bowl organization and its more than 40 statewide events, including the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. 

“I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Fiesta Bowl organization,” said Whiteman. “I look forward to working with the board, committee and staff as we strive to become a model non-profit. This is an exciting time for the organization as we fulfill our mission to contribute to Arizona’s economy and support charities in the state.”

“Steve has been an integral part of the volunteer-driven Fiesta Bowl organization for nearly 20 years,” Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Robert Shelton said. “Steve’s integrity and character represent the best qualities of the Fiesta Bowl. We are fortunate to have such an outstanding leader.”

Whiteman served on Special Committee formed to investigate alleged improprieties at the Fiesta Bowl. The Special Committee’s report, issued in March 2011, prompted numerous reforms as the organization works to restore trust among its stakeholders.                                                                                                      

Whiteman served as the chair of the newly formed Audit & Compliance Committee, which consists of board members who are financial experts or have other substantial non-profit organization financial expertise or experience. The Audit & Compliance Committee oversees financial reporting matters and enforcement of the Fiesta Bowl Code of Ethics, policies and other legal and regulatory matters, including the Fiesta Bowl compliance requirements.

While Chairman and CEO of Viasoft, Whiteman led Viasoft to a successful IPO. He was also voted the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year in Technology by Ernst and Young. Whiteman received his bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and his master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. In addition to his time spent volunteering with the Fiesta Bowl, Whiteman remains heavily engaged in the technology industry, serving on the board of two public companies, Actuate and Unify.  He and his wife, Bev, reside in Scottsdale.                   

Other officers on the Fiesta Bowl Executive Committee include: Chairman-Elect Brian Hall; Treasurer Jim Bruner; Secretary Matt Winter; Immediate Past Chairman Duane Woods.

The Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors also has added the following members:
