FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Cal State Northridge Matadors claimed the NAU Fiesta Bowl Volleyball Tournament title on Saturday, defeating the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks in four sets.

Four collegiate women’s volleyball teams took over Flagstaff at the 15th Annual NAU Fiesta Bowl Volleyball Tournament over the weekend. Two days of action-packed games were played between Cal State Northridge, San Diego State University, University of Idaho and host Northern Arizona University.

The tournament opened with a close matchup between the Cal State Northridge Matadors and the Idaho Vandals. After five sets, the Vandals trailed the Matadors and Northridge ended up with the first W of the weekend.

Following the first game, the NAU Lumberjacks took the court for their season home opener against the SDSU Aztecs. With the Rolle Activity Center fans roaring, the Lumberjacks swept the Aztecs and concluded day one of tournament play.

Competition began early Saturday morning for the Lumberjacks and Vandals. After a hard fought battle, NAU won the second set 27-25 and finished the match with a 3-0 sweep. In the second match of the day, the 0-1 Aztecs took on the 1-0 Matadors, but came up short leaving the Matadors undefeated.

With back-to-back matches SDSU regrouped for its next opponent, the Idaho Vandals. Both teams attacked the ball, but the Aztecs’ focus and determination left the team victorious.

In the final game of the tournament, 2-0 NAU and 2-0 Northridge stormed the court in a battle for the tournament title. With both teams undefeated in weekend play, the competition was intense, but the Northridge Matadors won the fourth match crowning them Fiesta Bowl 2013 Champions.

During a break in the final match, the Fiesta Bowl Committee presented a scholarship check to NAU in honor of David J. Eskridge, a former “Yellow Jacket” volunteer who died at 51 in 2010. He was a professional photographer based in Phoenix and the $2,000 David J. Eskridge Photojournalism Scholarship will serve as an inspiration to future generations of photographers and to underscore his commitment to his alma mater, NAU.

Congratulations to the California State University Northridge Matadors on their tournament crown. The Fiesta Bowl is proud to be a part of this long-running event in partnership with NAU to promote the state of Arizona, create lifelong memories and serve as welcoming hosts.
